Hello Impex,
I’m really impressed with your ADOX Fine Print Vario Classic FB. I’ve now tried the PE version (Easy Print Vario Classic), which I also like very much. Are there any plans to make this available in a semi-matt finish as well? The dead-matt finish isn’t really my thing, and when it comes to baryta, I’m more used to semi-matt (air-dried baryta surface). The Polywarmtone RC already has the sheen I like – would that be possible for the neutral version as well?
Best regards,
Andreas

Hello Andreas,
It all comes down to sales figures.
At the moment, Vario Classic Easyprint and Fineprint are off to a very good start.
The initial teething problems with the dark red light seem to have been sorted out now.
If things continue to improve like this, we’ll expand to other substrates as well.
We just have to order 25,000 square metres of substrate at a time, and that’s a lot of paper and a significant tie-up of capital (for many months).....
Best regards,
Mirko

Hello,
I’ve got a question too, regarding the statement:
“The initial teething problems with the dark red light seem to have been resolved.”
What does that actually mean? There are no longer any problems with red or dark red light, but orange is still not okay – have I understood that correctly?
At what wavelength are you on the safe side – 650 nm and above?
Thanks and best regards,
Taher

Hello Taher,
No, the paper is still as sensitive as it is.
Changing the sensitivity is extremely labour-intensive to test.
No one can give a precise specification in nm for photographic paper.
I mentioned this before in another thread.
You’ll have to test it yourselves. There’s no alternative. There never was.
Especially as there are no light sources – apart from perhaps LEDs or spectral vapour lamps – that provide an exact nm specification at all.
Standard Phillips red light bulbs are OK.
AP lamps only if they haven’t faded yet.
By ‘overcoming the teething problems’, I mean all the dissatisfied customers who hadn’t done a fog test and couldn’t detect a fog on the paper, but were of the opinion: ‘The paper doesn’t produce any contrast’, ‘The paper is grey’, etc.
Quite apart from the question of material replacement or who is to blame, I wasn’t so sure whether this wouldn’t kill sales of the paper.
There were actually whole classes of first-year students from Berlin photography schools who’d only bought the paper because it was the cheapest – then got a massive fog and complained, saying: “Ilford is perfectly white, so your paper is rubbish and grey”.
That’s when I got cold feet. At least the Berliners come to complain because they want their money back. You can then put them in the rental darkroom, switch on the red light and say: “Get on with it!”
Then they’ll believe you once they’ve seen it for themselves.
But what about the hundreds out there who think exactly the same but don’t complain, instead turning their backs on the paper?
Thank goodness, though, there are still enough people who know what they’re doing and for whom the paper is working just fine.
The first page of the catalogue might help, too.
Best regards,
Mirko

Is ADOX baryta paper actually suitable for heat drying? I haven’t managed to get it to dry flat even at low temperatures...
Air-drying under a heavy plate works fine, but the heat press turns the image into a wavy, unsightly print.

Which ADOX paper did you use?

Mirko,
If I remember correctly, Joerg/Ultra8 had a problem with PWT – he had trouble with wavy edges during heat drying last autumn.
The Vario Classic prints I saw from him were as flat as a board.

Exactly the other way round :) The Forte PWT lies flat as a board, the Adox Vario-Classic warps.

Joerg,
I suppose I'm getting on a bit too...

;-) I’ve now hit the big 3… I’m getting on a bit :)
But regarding the ADOX paper, how long should it be fixed and rinsed for? And what about heat drying?
Yes
