Hello,
I’ve found an old, exposed Orwo NP24 colour film. As it probably contains old family photos from before 1989, I’d like to try and get it developed. Is there any chance of success? I don’t know anything about colour film development myself. Is C41 the right process?
Many thanks
Schwedenstahl
Hi, why not have a look at the website www.super8.nl? There’s someone there who has experience with old processes and is involved in the development of such things. C 41 is definitely wrong. If you have a googled it, you can also find the ORWO recipes and make the developer yourself, although that probably doesn’t make much sense for film.

Hi Lars!
NP stands for ‘Negative Panchromatic’, so it’s black-and-white film.

Hello,
I’ve PDF-ised a few pages from the ORWO and AGFA manuals; to download them, just ask me for a login for silberphotographie. It’s free. By the way, there’s loads more information available to download there. :D
Best wishes and happy shooting!

Wasn't the NP24 the Orwo equivalent of Ilford FP4?

You’re right, Olexander, the colour film is called NC21. I developed the Orwo black-and-white film yesterday (using the original Orwo developer). – As well as the colour film I found, there were also three black-and-white ones.
The result: very dense negatives, so dense that I haven’t yet managed to produce a paper print that looks halfway decent. I’m wondering if Farmer’s toner might be an option? Does anyone have any experience with that? It probably won’t bring out any more contrast, will it?
I’m still a bit at a loss with the NC21 colour film.
Thanks

I’ve just found the technical data sheet for the NC21 development on silberphotographie.de; development kit C5168.
Now I’ll have a look to see if it’s still available anywhere, either as a replica or the original... (I’ve never developed colour film before, unfortunately... I’m curious to see how it goes)

Lars,
I’ve got a Swema developer kit, but it’s probably not worth sending it to you from Ukraine – it’s only similar, not identical.
Just give C41 a go, or black and white; with black and white, you’ll need to bleach out the colorants to keep the silver image.
Best regards,
Oleksander

Hi Oleksander,
I’ve still got a few old ORWOS films lying around – how much would it cost if you were to sell me the kit?
Why don’t you send me your address and I’ll post the money to you if you can get hold of some?

Lads, sort this out by email, otherwise they’ll clear your flat out.

I’ve just been to Foto Günter Fachlabor here in Dresden, and the nice chap there has someone on hand who occasionally uses up his leftover Orwo colour chemicals. Maybe I’ll get lucky – though it’s hardly worth it for just one roll of film! So here’s a bit of surreptitious advertising: Königsbrücker Straße, opposite the Schauburg, in the back courtyard... :-)

Richard,
I don’t think the parcel will get through customs at all, and besides, I’ll have to fill in loads of forms because it’s chemicals – it’s a right faff.
If you come and collect it, you can have it for free :) ...
