Hello, As I’m afraid that production of TriX is about to be discontinued, I was wondering if anyone knows of an alternative film with similar characteristics to TriX. Such as HP5, Adox 400, APX 400 (unfortunately also discontinued), etc. Mirko said that Classicpan 400 is based on the old Trix emulsion, so it’s coarser-grained. I’d go for that as a last resort. Hi David, The Neopan 400 is probably the closest match to the current Tri-X. The Neopan 400 has a slightly lower actual speed than the Tri-X, but it isn’t quite as prone to red cast as the Tri-X. Bye Frank

Yes, I couldn’t agree more – Neopan 400 comes remarkably close to the TriX look; it just doesn’t hold up quite as well when pushed (the highlights tend to get blocked out slightly); on the other hand, of the ‘big three’, Fuji is probably the most forward-looking company; so far, there have been no cost-cutting measures in the analogue sector, but quite the opposite – they are diligently continuing development and introducing new products. It just sometimes takes a while for that to filter through to Europe. Here’s my recommendation: for the exposure of Neopan 400, use ISO 250 and develop for 9 minutes (or 9:30 minutes for mixed-light enlargements) in Rodinal 1+50 (20°C, 1-minute agitation). Roman

I’ve had the best results with Neopan 400 and Microdol X; the Neopan develops a lovely graphic quality (rich contrasts and sharp edges) and has virtually no visible grain up to 30x40. Even in difficult lighting conditions such as those in a museum, I achieved good results by pushing it to 800 ASA (indoor, 20°C, according to the table).

Hello, 30/40 without grain – that’s not possible with 27 DIN; either you’re short-sighted, or the image is out of focus (focusing, optics). We’re talking about 35mm film, aren’t we? Roland

Oops, I meant 24x30 – my mistake. The Neopan in Microdol has a finer grain than the HP5 and produces much sharper detail. So even with this print size, the details are preserved and don’t fade into grey clouds like they do with Kodak films. But 24x30 from KB is quite an achievement for a film.

Mirko, No offence, but Tri-X wasn’t released until the late 1940s or early 1950s, by which time Forte had already severed ties with Kodak. So why is Fortepan 400, also known as Classic 400, based on Tri-X?
