Hello! A short quote from an order confirmation from FOTOIMPEX (referring to the ADOX Fine Print Vario Classic FB): "It is NOT identical to the old Classic Polykalt or Classic Polywarm. It is therefore a completely new emulsion with a different sensitisation. To increase storage stability and minimise fluctuations in the emulsions despite artisanal-style production, the speed of the silver halides has been reduced and, in return, the spectral sensitivity range has been increased to maintain a high overall sensitivity.” (End of quote). Does anyone here already have experience with which settings on the Heiland/Splitgrade are sensible and effective, or lead to usable working prints? Hello Johannes, I use this paper in both the RC version and as a baryta paper in combination with Neutol NE. I’m using the latest version 2.3 of the Splitgrade Controller. With the setting “FOTO IMP.Classic-Art FB PW matt” (IM CA PW), you can achieve excellent results with the baryta paper “ADOX Fine Print Polywarmton FB” (lgD approx. 1). With the RC paper “ADOX Fine Print Polywarmton RC”, slightly more light is required with the same setting on the Splitgrade Controller. It is then advisable to enter a fixed exposure compensation (see e.g. http://www.schwarzweiss-magazin.de/swmag_leser_05.htm). Good luck. Best regards, Otto Beyer!

If there is a split-grade setting for Amoloco Varimax, then this is certainly a suitable starting point. The new ADOX Fine Print Vario Classic is based on the Vario Classic, which we were the first importer to sell after German reunification in 1992; due to its great success, it has been offered by a Hamburg-based competitor since the mid-1990s and by a Dutch company since the late 1990s. However, this old version was manufactured in a production facility that no longer exists today. Consequently, even after 1999, it was either unavailable or only available in very limited quantities. The new version has been revised in many respects and is undergoing further development. Unfortunately, the first batches from early 2000 did not yet meet our quality standards. However, we have now reached a point where we can match the old quality. As a Splitgrade owner, it would be best if you could have a word with Uncle Heiland yourself and ask him to retest our products. Of course, we’ll provide free test samples for Mr Splitgrade! He doesn’t really listen to me because of some minor friction in the past. Polykaltton and Polywarmton are sensitised differently. If you treat the Vario Classic like a Polykaltton and activate its orange DUKA light, you end up with grey sludge and a lovely mushy mess. As this knowledge about Duka light and the haze test seems to have been lost on many users these days due to the ‘pampering’ emulsions from the major manufacturers, we’re hammering this point home quite explicitly so we don’t have to keep hearing that the paper is rubbish. Motto: Dark red or haze death!

Hi Johannes, The Phillips bulb is fine. The AP lamp is very bright and can only be used on this paper when it’s brand new. It fades over the years. A 3-year-old AP Duka light is still OK for Polywarmton, but the Vario Classic is playing up. Kaiser red filters are also OK. Best regards, Mirko
