Hello everyone,
I started developing my own film a few months ago (I can hear the applause, thank you very much ;)) Anyway, I’m using Kodak Tri-X film and have chosen Xtol as my developer. Following Kodak’s instructions, I’ve developed the Tri-X at a 7:1 dilution for 9 minutes and once at a 1:1 dilution for 9 minutes. Unfortunately, I can’t see any difference. What is the point of such a diluted mixture anyway? It does take longer, that’s for sure. Is that actually an advantage – the longer, the better? Is it also more beneficial when pushing and pulling?
Well, hopefully someone can give me some tips.
See you soon

Hello Anonymous,
The 1+1 dilution is a single-use developer. You pour it away after the development. The advantage of this is that the development process becomes reproducible, as it eliminates any mysterious extension factors.

Hello,
I’m not familiar with X-tol, but I am with its relative, DS-10. In this case, I can confirm your experience: there’s no difference between the stock solution and the 1+1 mixture. To keep development times short (which are quite long with DS-10), I only use the stock solution.
Best regards,

Hi Cfb,
Generally speaking, I only use the stock solution once, or twice if I’m developing another batch straight away. Since X-TOL doesn’t keep for very long anyway, I use the stock solution so that it gets used up more quickly and I don’t have to extend the development times.
So, as it stands, is there no difference in the result whether I use the stock solution or a dilution?
What actually happens if I push or pull? What if I use TMAX 3200? Does the dilution help in that case?
Many thanks to both of you for now

Hi Vizzo,
Have you read the XTOL data sheet?
Kodak claims that diluted XTOL results in slightly higher speed, slightly greater sharpness and slightly coarser grain.
I’ve only systematically tested XTOL at a 1:1 dilution; with Delta 100, Delta 400 and Acros, I get around 10 minutes; that’s fine by me.
Sharpness and grain are excellent.
Delta 400 pushes well (so far I’ve tried up to pseudo 1600 ASA).
When pulling, you naturally have the advantage that the times don’t get too short and are therefore more reproducible.
I have no experience with TRI-X.
