Hello!
As a ‘long-time’ 6×6 photographer, I’m wondering where I can get colour prints enlarged to 18×18 or 20×20 at a REASONABLE price.
Enquiries in Weimar (former GDR) – close to where the Pentacon 6 originated – have yielded negative experiences.
Quote: “That’s all history now”…
Please could you let me know where to find labs that do this at a reasonable price (not 3 euros per sheet!).

Roland,
€3 per sheet is certainly not a fair price :(
A decent colour print, produced by hand, takes around 15–20 minutes; a black-and-white one takes a little less, so it can’t be produced for less than €9–15.
Black and white is a bit simpler. We offer it from €3.50 per print (but not for much longer – we’ll soon have to make significant adjustments here), although, of course, due to the paper format, the shorter side is always the square.
That certainly isn’t the end of the story. It’s simply a professional format, and the associated production chain is equally professional in terms of price and performance.
Otherwise, there’s always the option of doing it yourself.
Nowadays, colour can be processed in the tray – almost just like B&W.
Best regards,
Mirko

...I’ve actually had colour enlargements of this size made from 6x6 negatives at Schlecker – obviously, you can’t expect contact print quality – but they weren’t actually that bad. Otherwise, the rule is: quality either comes at a price, or you’ll have to do it yourself...

Does that work at Schlecker?
I mean, you can’t exactly ask anyone. And I wouldn’t know what to tick either.
I heard once that it’s supposed to work at DM as well, but we don’t have one of those.

...at Schlecker, it’s really easy – at the bottom left of the order slip, you can tick the ‘Special request’ box and there’s space provided for a note. I always write a quick note there saying what I want, e.g. 120 roll film, 13x13... I’ve done this without any problems for 6x6, 4.5x6 and 6x9 formats.

Silly question:
So how much does that cost, roughly? I’ve only asked at the local camera shops so far, and they’re charging quite a lot.
I do black-and-white myself, but I’m interested in colour.

...an 18x18 print costs the same as the corresponding 18x24 print. The price list is on display at Schlecker – I don’t know it off by heart.

Hello. I don’t quite see the problem. Even in the big chains, where it’s almost exclusively CEWE Color now, the standard still applies that ‘anything up to 6x9 is amateur’. So, all possible sizes up to 60x60 should cost the same as 35mm. Just pop them in a bag and off you go, without asking too many questions, because the staff in the chemists (or rather, soap shops :( ) have no clue about photography anyway. With modern large-format printers featuring contrast compensation, you’ll get perfectly satisfactory results.
