Hello everyone,
I’d like to set up my own little darkroom. As my friend, who found the equipment in the loft, unfortunately knows just as little about the technical capabilities of his darkroom as I do, I’m hoping that perhaps someone here might be able to help me out...
So, it’s a MEOPTA AXOMAT 4a COLOR enlarger, and my main question is whether it can also be used to enlarge/expose black-and-white photos?
Many thanks in advance!

In short:
yes.
Either work with white light and graduated filters, or adjust the gradients using the colour mixer. There have been plenty of discussions in the past about the pros and cons.

Sorry, it’s the MEOPTA AXOMAT 4 COLOR enlarger, not the 4a model (if that makes any difference at all)!

The Axiomat 4 Color usually comes with an opal glass lamp, a condenser and a filter drawer – in other words, it’s a standard black-and-white enlarger. With Axiomat, ‘Colour’ doesn’t necessarily mean a colour head.
So no swivelling in filters... for variable-contrast paper, a multigrade filter set must be used. If I remember correctly, a 75mm x 75mm filter drawer.
