Hi lads, I suppose I’m just a bit daft. I’ve just finished two rolls of Maco 820 IR 35mm film, and I’m feeling a bit frustrated. (Wasting 4x5 sheets trying to get the exposure right is just too much of a faff for me). So: Filters: 25a, an old East German IR red (probably around 680) and a 730. Reference exposure: 100, base exposure measured with the F100 in matrix mode and in parallel with a Mastersix and a Digiflash (spot metering); without filters, they agreed to within a maximum of 1/3 stop. (actually, it was always just the F100 that assessed the sky as slightly darker). Subjects: green foliage in the sun and in the shade, bricks in the sun, blue sky with beautiful water and reflections. Exposure: the red filter 1–5 stops over. The IR was 4–8 stops over, the 730 was 5–10 stops over (always relative to unfiltered metering). The reference exposures without a filter at ISO 100 are at least 3 stops too underexposed. Red enters the realistic range at best at 5 stops over, IR at around 7, and the 730 is still underexposed at 10 stops. So, compared to everything on the data sheet, I’m missing an average of about 4 stops. I would have said it was a miscalculation, but with the Sunny Sixteen rule – i.e. 8 at 250 or 4 at 1000 for 100 ISO, or EV 14 for a bright, sunny summer’s day – I can’t be that far off. Incidentally, I developed one batch in X-Tol and one in Tanol (Moersch actually specifies just 1 stop for 25B!! and 5 for 715). Any ideas? Regards, Martin

I use 820 film with a Hoya R72 filter. I set the exposure to 6 ASA, which is 4 stops. Then I perform the development in ID-11. The negatives look good.

Hello, I’ve also got myself two Maco 820s, and the Hoya R72 is on its way too. But now my specialist retailer (Küns Fotohaus #1) is telling me that I should only use the dark red filter and not an IR filter. Does anyone have an opinion on this? It contradicts everything I’ve read so far. Ciao Bartman aka Klaus ;-)

Hi Klaus, You should definitely go darker than a 25A. Even though my results are consistently 4 stops underexposed, based on what I’ve seen, I’d use at least a 680 filter (I don’t have the exact ‘numbers’ to hand, but there are curves in the photo.net infrared tutorials) if you want the Wood effect and a distinctly black sky. (With my last roll of film, a ‘proper infrared image’ only appeared at +9–10 stops instead of +5, and that was with the 730 filter) Mösch also specifies 715 with +5 stops (3 ASA) for Tanol development. And he normally only publishes what he has tested himself. I’ll definitely be conducting another two 4x5 sheet exposures this weekend with a gradually adjusted slider to see what comes out. Results on Monday. Regards Martin

The Maco is considerably slower than its Kodak counterpart. I meter the exposure at 25 ISO for the shadows and use a Rollei IR filter for the shot. This produces the Wood effect.

Hi 'Mau', your Rollei filter seems to me to be more of a red filter; with a genuine IR filter (which ONLY transmits infrared light), you’ll struggle to achieve an acceptable level of density at ISO 25 with the Maco IR! :)

The Maco IR 820c gives good results with a Lee IR filter or a Heliopan IR 695. For standard film, use an exposure index (EI) of around 6 to 12; for the new ISO 400 film, use an EI of 25 or TTL at EI 400.

Hi 'Mau', your Rollei filter looks to me more like a red filter; with a proper IR filter (one that lets ONLY infrared light through), you’ll struggle to get an acceptable level of density at ISO 25 with the Maco IR! :)

Read it again carefully. It measures _on_the_shadows_ at 25 ASA. That’s an overexposure of about 2 stops, making it 6 ASA. That fits, doesn’t it? By the way, the Rollei IR filter is an RG695. Best regards Stefan
