Hi from Hamburg,
Why isn't there – or has there never been – a 400 ASA efke?
Best regards, Thomas

Thomas,
Question to Radio Yerevan: "Is there no Efke 400?" Answer: "In principle, yes, except that it doesn’t come from Croatia but from England, and it isn’t manufactured by Efke but merely packaged, and is similar to a film called HP5 by Ilford."
But decades ago there was an ADOX KB 25, which was eventually replaced by the KB 27; that should be a potential candidate.
I can’t tell you why it’s no longer available either; presumably the grain issue is the key factor. If you’re familiar with the 21, then you can surely picture the 27.

It has nothing to do with the grain, but rather with the fact that such a film would, in any case, have very different characteristics to the classic ADOX emulsions.
The film achieves this clean red/blue separation due to its spectral sensitivity. Unfortunately, however, this means that part of the curve (total area = total speed) is not utilised. To exceed 200 ASA, one would have to utilise that part and increase the red sensitivity. Furthermore, at least two layers of emulsion would have to be cast, which would result in out-of-focus images compared to a single-layer emulsion.
In short, an ADOX KB27, if produced, would be more like a Classic 400 or Trix but quite different from an ADOX 100.
Best regards,
Mirko
