Was ist eigentlich aus der Firma Tura (in Düren) und den beliebten Filmen geworden? Habe gehört, dass Tura vor einigen Monaten Insolvenz anmelden musste.

What actually happened to Tura (in Düren) and those popular films? I heard that Tura had to file for bankruptcy a few months ago.

See here: World of Photo – Tura news 27 October 2005 Tura comes to an end Tura, the long-established company based in Düren, is ceasing production for good, according to a report in the Aachener Nachrichten dated 25 October 2005. The foreign investors who had been in contact with Tura have pulled out; nobody is investing in a dying industry anymore, according to the insolvency administrator Dr Rolf-Dieter Möning. Tura AG had filed for insolvency in March of this year. According to Möning, Tura had clung to the production of film and photographic paper right up to the end and had apparently failed to come to terms with the age of digital photography. Dear Mr Bäekker, During my time in Tura’s field sales team, you were a very pleasant customer with an interesting business concept and a well-structured product range. I have often been able to recommend you to others. I myself am glad to have witnessed the end of Tura from a distance. I took over and restructured my parents’ business in Aue a good two years ago. We have gone fully digital. Among other things, we have a Fuji Frontier, a brand-new EPSON 7800 and a Heißaminator in operation. Well, well. You can’t really see it that way. Tura was in the mass market. Department store films, private label brands, millions of units at rock-bottom prices. The black-and-white business was a side issue, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this small sector was profitable, alongside the cut-throat prices in the colour film market. Here at FOTOIMPEX, we’re not sitting on a dying branch but on the only green twig left on the tree. If necessary, we’ll have to replant it next to the dead tree. Just as is supposed to happen with Tura. Tura is to be continued on a very small scale as a manufacturer of black-and-white papers and films. Let’s wait and see. Mirko

Well, it would depend on where the ‘new’ Tura sources its raw materials. I wouldn’t be too keen on yet another Efke/Foma/Forte processing service – there are already plenty of those around... ;-)

Hi Mirko, I shoot almost exclusively in analogue black and white and don’t feel in the least bit like I’m on a dying branch. But Frank quoted the insolvency administrator, who was rambling on about a dying branch. That’s what he was referring to. News like Frank’s just gets on my nerves. First he pretends to be presenting an ‘official factual report’, but in reality he just wants to advertise his digital lab; otherwise, posting the website address would make no sense. But you see this in all analogue forums: concerned reports about the dire state of analogue photography, some of which seem to be very calculated. Regards, Peter

Hello Mirko, Who exactly is this noble knight for Dören? You yourself, or the sales representative based near Hamburg? Or perhaps a future Belgian-controlled enclave of SW Photography far beyond the Rubicon? Or is a former British-Swiss joint venture turning its attention to ‘Europe’ and looking to make money at its heart? I don’t really believe in the remaining *manufacturers*; they manage it much more cost-effectively under their own Dören. Best regards, Franz

Franz, None of the above. I can’t say any more on the matter. It’s not about noble knights riding in to do good deeds, but rather about preserving a few jobs in the S/W assembly sector there, if at all possible. It’s no big deal. There’s no need for you to start worrying about it now. Turapan is no longer available anyway, and this won’t change the availability of materials on the market either. Best regards, Mirko
