Hi everyone,
When Ilford stopped selling photographic chemicals last autumn, we spent quite a long time racking our brains over what alternatives we could offer.
As mentioned before, we mix our own ID11 and Perceptol, but we couldn’t really find anything comparable for Microphen.
Personally, we’ve come to the conclusion that ATM49 pushes the film almost as effectively, whilst offering a much finer grain.
During our testing, we also came across good old Promicrol as a possible alternative.
My experience with this developer dates back to the days when it was supplied as a powder in small tin tins (or did I get mine from a flea market..?) – in any case, it now comes in bottles as a liquid concentrate.
As we have a good source for British products, Promicrol has recently found its way onto our shelves without much hassle and is surprisingly inexpensive.
So, for anyone who has been working with Microphen and is still waiting for delivery, we can now offer Promicrol from stock.
1 litre costs €8.00 plus VAT.

PROMICROL
Universal negative developer
The ‘English magic potion’ for increasing ISO sensitivity.
Promicrol is like a liquid Microphen.
At standard processing times, the nominal speed increases to N+0.5 to N+1, and with a 50% longer development time, it effectively reaches N+2.
Dilution 1+9 for the working solution.
When diluted 1:4, Promicrol can be used as a replenisher. 17ml of replenisher per film is sufficient to maintain a constant working solution.
1 litre of concentrate at a bargain price.
