Hi I was lucky (or unlucky) enough to find 50 rolls of 200 ASA 25-exposure APS Agfa film for under 40. I couldn’t resist! Apparently, they’ve just come out of cold storage. Now for my questions. Which camera do you recommend? What’s the easiest way to get the film out of the cassette? How many rolls can I develop with a C41 kit, e.g. for 10–12 135 rolls? Is there anything else I need to bear in mind with this material? I still need to fit a developing spiral to the film! Or quite simply, are there still labs that develop film at a reasonable price? About the camera. I bet you’re looking for an SLR, preferably one that’s splash-proof too? Then have a look at the Minolta Vectis S-1 – you can get it from €20 with a kit lens. Someone else will have to answer the rest. Regards, Sven.

The major labs specialising in this sort of thing will surely have developed something like that by now. Why not just drop off a test film (you’ve got plenty) at dm, Rossmann & Co.? With this film, I’d consider the potential for image quality too low to go to the trouble of processing it myself. If you’d said 50 Agfa medium-format slides, okay... but APS? Good luck Nils

As for the camera, I’d also go for the Minolta Vectis. Its dimensions are very compact, at least for the APS format. APS was never intended for development by amateur photographers – to remove the film from the cassette and reload it without damaging it, you need special spooling devices, which were only available in conjunction with professional developing machines. I bought something like that from Agfa on eBay years ago... There’s no point even asking Cewe and the like – they no longer develop APS film. Hi Wolf After you mentioned that you need a special rewinding device, I immediately sacrificed a roll of film – I needed one for practice anyway. With the help of a small flat-head screwdriver, I quickly unlocked the cartridge mouth and rewound the film leader out. No problem, even in the dark. It’s actually easier than fishing the film leader out of a 135 cassette. Unfortunately, I haven’t yet found a provider here in France for development in a large-scale lab. Doesn’t our host have an address in Berlin to hand? If I can send 10–15 films off for development at once, the postage costs will be worth it again. So the option of home development doesn’t seem like the worst alternative to me. At least if I can’t find any other option. Regards Marcus

Hi Markus, You can develop the film using the C41 process. To do this yourself, you’ll need a suitable spiral. Jobo used to make something like that. I think it’ll be quicker if you adapt an adjustable spiral designed for APS film. Fuji used to make a high-end compact camera with a fixed focal length, similar to the Tiara or Super Mini DL. Matthias
