I’d like to develop my own black-and-white slide film (Double-8). So far, I’ve only developed black-and-white negative film. - Is slide film development much more difficult? - What’s different? - What additional equipment do I need? - Do I need more chemicals (is it expensive)? - Does anyone know where I can buy Double-8 or 16mm developing tins? My experience in photography. We’re talking about classic black-and-white reversal processing. Reversal processing is considerably more time-consuming than ‘normal negative processing’. After all, the film has to be turned inside out. It’s straightforward with films designed for this purpose and the right chemicals. With standard black-and-white films and homemade solutions, you may well be in for some nasty surprises. The spectrum ranges from black spots to emulsion detachment. The reasons behind these surprises are beyond my knowledge and capabilities. The good news is that the Foma reversal kit works brilliantly. As far as I know, the R100 is available in 35mm, 8mm, 16mm and as 35mm cinema film. You can find a ‘tub’ for these films at FOTOIMPEX. More good news: I have also successfully developed Maco Orto films using the Foma kit. There is a helpful article on the SW Diageschüt in SW Magazine.

I’ve forgotten the most important bit. The chemicals are a bit pricey, like those for black-and-white negatives. The Foma kit is enough for 8 rolls of 35mm films. It contains everything you need. If you follow the instructions, nothing really can go wrong. Apart from the kit for developing 8mm film, no special accessories are required. It’s best if you give FOTOIMPEX a ring or send them an email. They’ll be able to give you a more detailed answer about the 8mm film. PS The Rollei R3 film is also suitable for reversal processing.

And one more thing: Unless you want to develop the film chemically – which is not recommended – you’ll need a 500-watt lamp for the intermediate exposure. You can get them cheaply at DIY stores. Regards, CP

Good day, I’ll say straight away that the website isn’t mine, even though the author has the same first name as me, so don’t ask me about his prices – I just stumbled across the site by chance.
