Hello everyone,
I’d like to scan some very old slides, but they’re covered in a thick layer of grime. Does anyone know how to clean them?
Many thanks in advance

Unfortunately, you didn’t mention how the slides are framed.
I’m guessing they’re in glass frames.
In that case, I’d definitely make the effort to take the slides out of their frames. The coating is probably the result of bacterial corrosion and fungal growth.
A professional photo restorer will be able to help.
I would simply soak a slide that isn’t too important in a wetting agent such as Mirasol by Tetenal and then let it dry naturally in the air in a dust-free room.
There are (or were?) also special film cleaning agents which you could try to remove the coating with – and hopefully only the coating.
