Hello Stefan, ? Do you mean what Willi Beutler called an ‘exemplary negative’ (and which he sorely missed on the market) – in other words, a professionally produced negative of an authentic scene (which you can use, for example, as a visual reference or as the basis for prints) – or the equivalent of a TV test card? The latter used to be available here: fotowand.com — if you’re not put off by the website’s design, which doesn’t look like the provider is particularly keen on selling, you might find something. ? Above all, though: do have a look at Stouffer. Our host also offers at least one of their many grey wedges in their shop (though it might be a bit too big for you). ? Good luck Nils

I think in this case you’re looking for a contact print for enlargement. I need one myself, but here’s a tip from an old master photographer. Work on a black negative on the emulsion side using a ruler and a very fine needle, carefully scratching a pattern into it. That should normally be enough to judge the sharpness. I haven’t tried it myself because I happen to own such negatives. Negatives like this do crop up on eBay from time to time, but you need to be patient.

… ...then see if you can find someone who offers a service called slide exposure. In my student days (less than 10 years ago), you could find such services, for example, in university computer centres and other reproduction facilities. I remember this from my own experience at the FU Berlin and in Mainz, at least. It was simply the precursor to projectors and PowerPoint. I can see that the ZDV Mainz still offers this service: https://www.zdv.uni-mainz.de/465.php and I’m sure it won’t be the only one.
