Hi everyone, I hope I’m not bothering you too much.
To the question: If the bottle doesn’t fill up with the developer and you can’t exactly squeeze glass bottles, surely there must be some alternative methods?
I don’t have any Protectan spray, nor do I have any glass marbles.
How about using gas from a camping gas bottle (propane-butane mix)?
You could also just burn off the oxygen in the air, then nothing can oxidise anymore.
But I’m sure you’ve got a few better and less dangerous suggestions for me, haven’t you?
Many thanks for your replies.
Regards, Harald.

Get yourself a bottle of Protectan... alternatives like butane or propane are rubbish, and with Protectan, the bottle just lasts forever...

Hello uworischki,
"Protectan" *is* a propane/butane mixture.
Admittedly, it comes in special, more expensive packaging. If you need a brand name to feel reassured, go for Protectan.
For everyone else, argon from a welder or standard camping gas will do just fine.
Best regards,
Franz

Thanks, Franz. You never stop learning...

Hi Franz,
How do you measure it out?
Is there anything you can knock together that works well?
Best regards,
Mirko

Hi Mirko,
Buy a lighter fluid can, put a hose on top*), and you're sorted. The amount to use is just as much a rough guess as with the expensive version. Hold the can upright with the top facing upwards, so it doesn't come out as a liquid.
Oh, and by the way: try to smoke as little as possible :-)
Hope that helps,
Franz
*): Secure it with a cable tie. It costs nothing and you’ve got a handy grip to squeeze it with.

Hello there, gas refillers :-)
What’s actually stopping us from simply using a disposable lighter to get the gas into the bottle?
Unless I’m completely off the mark here, I don’t necessarily need to force all the air out of the bottle.
Since very few people are likely to be shaking their developer around on a bike rack all week, a 2–5-second “pffffffft” from the lighter into the neck of the bottle should actually be enough.
If you can’t believe that gas is actually heavier than air, fill a cup or glass with it and then tip it over a flame. (I accept no liability for singed hair on the back of your hand or similar :-) )
Best regards,
Alois

Hi Alois,
It’s taking too long for me; hardly any gas is coming out of the lighter. After all, I only want a small flame.

Somehow I get the impression that the Rodinal is eating away at my Protectan. The plastic bottle gets more and more concave in the days that follow. But my Protectan tin is also quite old. At least there’s no mention of it being flammable or anything like that; instead, it says “Protectan is neither harmful to health nor a fire hazard” and “Not compatible with polystyrene and acrylic glass”. Surely it doesn’t contain R12, like they used to in the ‘compressed air cylinders’? Another one of those typical questions that automatically goes to Franz.

Hi Franz,
Since I light my cigarettes – rather decadently – with an all-metal lighter from a neighbouring country to the west, there’s nothing to stop me
from ‘turning up’ the flame on the disposable lighter :)
Best regards,
Alois

Hi Wolfgang,
That could be.
Hi Alois,
By the way :-) They make some lovely bits and pieces in Bradford, PA, don't they?
Best regards,
Franz

Hi Franz,
It’s not that far. Paris is right on the ground :-)
Best wishes to the petrol lighter front
