Hello
I
have inherited two Jobo developing tanks. Due to very frequent use, a blackish film has built up on the plastic spirals. Does anyone know if there is a special cleaning product for this?

Those are silver deposits. They’re not a problem. Anything that doesn’t wash off won’t cause any issues during development.

Hello,
You could soak them in the bleach-fix bath used in the C-41 process; that should dissolve the silver. I’d rather not publish the old, tried-and-tested recipe for the tray cleaner.

Spürsinn sells a cleaner for situations like this. It’s not even that expensive, but I don’t think it’s worth it for just two reels. I treated my reels to a clean once, with the enthusiastic help of the best wife ever – you do need to give them a good scrub with a brush, but the results were impressive. Afterwards, the reels were noticeably brighter; I only have the white 1501 reels. I also had the impression that the films were easier to wind onto the reels afterwards; it was simply easier.
Kukident and similar tips, as well as dishwasher detergent, didn’t help with the cleaning, and my attempt to recreate a recipe for a special cleaner failed because I couldn’t get hold of the ingredients.
The Spürsinn stuff has been the best I’ve had so far.

...I’ve got used to the coating by now... Above all, you should avoid rubbing against the coating with force at all costs. The more you sand it down, the more micro-fine scratches you create, which then get clogged up with coating again all the quicker... Just ignore it...

Hello,
I get my developing trays spotlessly clean using silver cleaner from the chemist’s. It should work for the reels as well.
But you can just ignore it if you like.

Hi Peter,
Have you noticed any defects in the negatives, such as dichroic fog or anything similar, after using the silver cleaner? I’m just asking because it contains thiourea, which might cause problems.

Hello Jochen,
My experience is limited to cleaning developing trays for positives. I haven’t noticed any adverse effects there either.
I’ve never cleaned the spirals. I don’t see any need to.
As for the trays, it wasn’t so much a matter of necessity as my own aesthetic sensibilities that prompted me to clean them.
Best regards,
Peter

As mentioned earlier: a bleach-fix solution (or just a Bleach bath, but then you’ll need to ‘fix’ the film) from any colour process (RA4, C41, E6...). Leave it to work for a few minutes, then rinse thoroughly.
You might be able to get some second-hand; just ask at your nearest minilab (if you can still find one) if they’d be willing to give you a litre or so from their collection tank...
