Volker, As I don’t use either Agfa or D76, I can only give a general answer. Advantages of dilution: Single-bath developer (i.e. no extension factors) Easy temperature control via the temperature of the dilution water Generally slightly better-balanced negatives (everything proceeds more slowly) Development times exceeding 5 minutes with Efke 50 and other low-speed films Reportedly (though I haven’t observed this yet) finer grain Disadvantages of higher dilution: Slight loss of effective sensitivity utilisation More waste chemical to cart off to the BSR As I said, this applies generally to ATM 49 or D76 or other powder concentrate stock solution developers. Mirko, I always thought that using a higher dilution of the developer would make the negatives more sharp, but also grainier. Is that not the case?

Hello Guest, That’s true sometimes, but not always. With Rodinal, for example (and probably R09 as well), the grain gets finer as the dilution increases. With Ultrafin Liquid, the grain remains the same, but the negatives become out of focus. That’s my experience with HP5+ and the developers mentioned. I hardly ever use ID11/D76. My standard developers are HRX from Spur and Rodinal (or F09/R09). Best regards, Franz

Furthermore, according to cfb_de, you can pour the developer down the drain. IMHO, the 1+1 dilution is best for D76 and Xtol because - you get reproducible results (single-use developer); - in the JOBO 1520 tank, you do not fall below the minimum amount of concentrate (100ml) required for 2 films. In my humble opinion, the 1+1 dilution is best for D76 and Xtol because - you get reproducible results (single-use developer);

What’s the argument against using the developer undiluted just once? I store ID-11 as a stock solution and perform dilution as needed for individual developments, or use it undiluted, but in any case I pour it away afterwards (into the waste chemical container, of course).
