Hello!
I have a Magnixfax with a colour-mixing head. I almost exclusively enlarge 6x7 negatives. The Meopta format mask takes up a lot of space on the negative wheels and reduces the available area.
If I remove the mask and use the lenses, a smudged fog often appears at the edge of the print. It must have something to do with stray light, surely???
If I put the format mask back in, the fog disappears.
What should I do?

Have you ever tried using the metal sliding masks in combination with the glass, making sure that the margin spacing is the same at the top, bottom, right and left?
These stages are all designed for the ‘standard’ format, which is dictated by the format masks. If you go beyond that, you enter the ‘limiting range’ of the design. You may need to file down the stage. However, this is difficult and should only be done with the mask sliders removed.
Using a condenser instead of a mixed light can also help.
I assume you have already checked for paint abrasions and touched these up with matt black camera paint.
