Dear forum members,
Due to the increase in anonymous posts on various other forums, we have decided to adopt a slightly more restricted format for our small but excellent analogue forum.
In future, the forum will require you to be logged in before you can reply or post a message.
This will prevent anonymous posts and potential confusion (e.g. one person posting under different names).
Everyone is still free to post here, and we are delighted to receive any constructive contributions.
The registration process is a piece of cake. We simply verify the validity of your email address, and the whole process takes just a few seconds.
Naturally, the forum will not pass on or otherwise use your email addresses.
You can, of course, continue to read the forum without registering or logging in.

Hi Mirko,
I’ll post less often from now on. I can’t log in from work because of their security settings.
And I’m usually not really in the mood to read through the forum a second time in the evenings.
I’d have hoped that self-discipline would work just as well here as it does on the competitor’s forum.
Best regards,
Franz

Hi,
Can someone translate Mirko's post above about the forums!!!

@ Franz,
That’s exactly what she doesn’t do in the competitors’ forum!
The bit about the security settings at work is an interesting point, of course. I hadn’t thought of that.
What exactly do those settings block, then??
Have you tried it?
Regards,
Mirko
PS Otherwise, just send me your post by email. I’ll upload it for you
@ Niall,
You’ve already figured out what’s new, as I can see you logged in to post this. That’s all we ask for. Log in before posting to avoid double posts under different names by a single user.

.......Right, Mirko!! I thought there was something different when I tried to post. Thanks!!!

Hi Mirko,
I do think the Competitors’ Forum works pretty well. When I compare it to other forums (FC, for example)... Let’s not go there.
The tone is right; people treat each other in a friendly and considerate manner, even ‘silly’ questions get answered – if only by pointing them to the search function (which would be able to answer almost all standard questions there; unfortunately, many users aren’t able to formulate a search query properly).
Or are you referring to that thread the other day with over 200 posts? I wasn’t entirely uninvolved in that. When a little troll like that starts up, a few regulars just have a quick chat on the phone or email each other, and the trollish poster (he wasn’t even a troll, trolls only post once) gets kept busy. I was more than happy to take that on with a broad grin :-)
My problem at work is this: cookie acceptance is only permitted on selected sites. That means I can’t log in.
As we work in a centrally administered environment, I can’t just get you to grant me access either.
To be honest, I can’t be bothered with ‘Post by Email’. So I suppose I’ll be posting less.
Best regards,
Franz

I think that’s a very good idea. That way, I won’t be blamed for every bit of nonsense anymore.

Franz,
Are you sure you have to eat a biscuit to log in?
As far as I can tell, you only need to do that for the ‘stay logged in as long as I’m on this computer’ feature.
I’ll have a look through the scripts tonight.
I bought the software – I didn’t programme it myself – so I can’t tell you off the top of my head.
Otherwise, please give it a go and decline the cookies offered.
If more users have this problem, we’ll have another think about the whole thing.
After all, the benefit should always be in proportion to the effort involved.
No more posts would then also mean no double posts......

Hi Mirko,
Of course, I can’t be absolutely sure. But I get the same behaviour when I force my old Netrape at home not to accept cookies.
It could also be down to other modern browsers, a proxy or who knows what else. Unfortunately, I don’t have the chance to check at work what’s been ‘customised’ there. That’s the major downside when the client is a major customer of that Redmond-based company.
That’s why I don’t have the option to politely decline the cookies on offer either.
Best regards,
Franz

@Mirko
Unfortunately, you’ll be banging your head against a brick wall. No login without a cookie. The session ID has to be handled somehow. The forum software is pretty much the same, regardless of which organisation is behind it.
I’m not too keen on it either. Every now and then you only have a few minutes to spare, or you just can’t be bothered with 20 mouse clicks...
@Franz
How’s your DIY 8x10 coming along, by the way? I’d be interested to know.
