Hello, I’m currently in the process of scanning various images. So far, I’ve scanned Alford, Kodak and Washi, all without any issues. With the CMS 20, however, I’m having the following problem: The negatives look great at first glance, but when I scan them, unsightly ‘spots’ appear. This happens whether I’m scanning in black and white or colour. From 300 dpi to 4,000 dpi. I’ve attached a section of the image; I hope you can see what I mean. It looks like an image of terribly poor quality that has been enlarged, with the grey tones only roughly preserved. I’m getting really frustrated with this image :( Can anyone help? Hello Renate, It really is a large black area. I’ve cut out the affected part of the background. You should be able to see the effect clearly on a computer. By the way, the scanner is a Canon 9000F Mark II.

I feel the same way... You can see a few streaks or clouds and a round patch, but without a point of reference or any other clues, I can’t say what it is.

Can you actually see anything in the negative (using a magnifying glass)? The image is probably affected by underexposure due to the backlighting, and there’s likely nothing visible in the black areas. Scanners don’t like that. Some images need to be enlarged before you scan them.

...it was just a quick question by the way; I also use a Canon Mark II and have only ever had problems once (I’d inserted the glass, or rather the negative, the wrong way round – which resulted in some very strange effects on the scan) Best regards, Andi

Hi Andi, Thanks a lot for the tip. That was actually exactly the reason, as I’ve just realised. With the other films, it’s very easy to tell the difference. The ADOX looks glossy on both sides, and that’s where the mistake crept in. Many thanks. I’m almost at my wits’ end Regards Sven
