Hi, I've received the device and don't know anything about it...

Hello, well, if you could post the photo in a higher resolution, I’m sure I’d be able to tell. As it stands, it looks to me like a colour analyser for colour contact prints. It might also have a light meter built in. It appears to be one of those old ‘Wallner’ devices, which have been technically obsolete for decades.

Colour analyser / Beli / timer. In the 1980s, I had a similar model, apparently an earlier version with an older sensor head and two fewer knobs. However, I suspect the basic operating principle is similar. High speed. It should still be a very good piece of kit for black-and-white work, even by today’s standards. Without being able to make out the labelling, I suspect that the small grey knob at the top left of the lower, desk-shaped section is the speed control. You need to test the speed, ideally using a special test negative.

To take a reading, switch on the continuous light (there was a toggle switch for this) and position the cell on the base plate over the area to be measured. Then turn the time knob (the large blue-grey knob) until the pointer is at zero. Switch off the continuous light and trigger the exposure using the small grey knob in the middle.

Perhaps this will be helpful for your initial attempts.

First of all, thanks to both of you. According to the label, it’s a Wallner Color S – it’s quite a large machine.
Well, let’s see and have a bit of a play around… maybe it really is suitable for black and white. Regards, Stefan
