Hello everyone,
I have the following problem:
I performed the exposure on the Fuji Neopan 400 at ISO 800.
Now I’m looking for a suitable
fine-grain developer for push processing. The print will later undergo an enlargement to
40x50. I’d like to achieve a very fine grain and
good sharpness.
My first choice:
Perhaps Perceptol isn’t the right choice after all?
I’d be grateful for a reply.
Best regards,
Dirk

It’s like trying to square the circle, even if you ask in dozens of forums. Otherwise, all other developers would be out of a job. You’ll just have to accept that you’ll need to make compromises and learn from your own experience. I’ve been looking for ages for an investment with low risk and high returns.

Dirk,
Since you’ve had an exposure to the Neopan at 800, Perceptol is really one of the least recommended developers right now.
It does produce a fine grain, but it reduces the film’s sensitivity.
In your specific case, I’d recommend A49 base emulsion. It produces a sufficiently fine grain and works well with 800 ASA.
Next time, you could try exposing at 200 and using Perceptol.
Best regards,
Mirko

Hi Mirko,
Thank you very much for your reply. I’d already been thinking along similar lines based on recommendations. The photos are very important to me. That’s why I’m trying (as a complete beginner) to get as many opinions as possible.
At the moment, my plan is as follows:
I’ll push the film with an exposure at ISO 800 using A49.
I’ll develop the film with exposure at ISO 400 with Perceptol. (I hope I’ve got that right now)
What about the mixing ratio? Can you or anyone else give me a tip?
So far, I’ve only developed with ID-11, 1:1.
What can you say about the development time or the need to agitate regularly?
The packaging (Perceptol) lists the following values for Neopan ISO 400:
1+0 : 14
1+1 : 18
1+3 : 23
Can I rely on these recommendations?
Many thanks for your help
Dirk
