Hello Does anyone here have one? What have your experiences been like? I’m currently having mine modified at Wiese. (Mirror pre-exposure) Has anyone else had problems with scratched negatives?

Nah, but with all that light leak through the viewfinder and no mirror, you couldn’t get any shake-free shots even on a tripod... OK, that was back in the GDR days. Things might have changed over the last 15 years. Mirko

The light leak is easy to sort out. Remove the magazine Unscrew the cover This reveals a silver folded streak containing a piece of foam rubber. Slowly remove this foam rubber and gently ‘knead’ it between your fingers. It will expand slightly. Then stick the rubber back in place, put the folded silver strip back where it belongs, and screw it back together. Done.

Hi Mirko, I can confirm the issue with a light leak: unfortunately, not every magazine fits every camera body, as one would expect with a magazine design... As for the camera shake issue, even when using tripods, I can only say: other medium-format focal-plane shutter cameras (e.g. Rollei SL66...) without a mirror lock-up also ‘shake’ at shutter speeds below 1/60; at faster shutter speeds, with the NORMAL FOCAL LENGTH (!) there is hardly a trace of it; this applies to Kievs from the old GDR days just as much as to those of today. Ergo: don’t make the Kievs out to be worse than they are; incidentally, one shouldn’t do that with Foma and Efke films either...

Hello Kiev users, Well, mine also ‘shaked’ quite a bit even at 1/125th and even at 1/250th. I nearly cried back then because all the films were simply out of focus......then in 1990 I came across a Mamya 645 and I’ve been off them ever since, so I really can’t say anything authoritative about today’s models anymore. I also know that some others were quite happy with it and gratefully bought the lenses off me back then. Mine was a second-hand “domestic model” from Moscow, built around 1988. Maybe the dealer just ripped me off <_< IM: I’ve never heard anything about scratched negatives, though. Only about light leaks. Regards, Mirko

IM Photographer, I had my share of problems with the Kiev. In particular, there was a light leak between the magazine and the body, and also reflections on the inside of the camera base. Getting a 1/60 shutter speed handheld was no problem at all, and in some cases even 1/30. What also struck me were the different actual aperture sizes for the same f-stop when comparing three standard lenses. Otherwise, I’ve already posted about this here in the forum.
