There are two drawers; one is presumably for filters (at the front), but what about the other one on the right-hand side? Also, the new descriptions for Meopta’s colour heads (e.g. Color 3) include recommended settings for the gradient with different paper types (e.g. Ilford). Do these also apply to the Magnifax with a colour head? Those are the questions I have at the moment; perhaps more will arise as I use it. Best regards, Marion

Marion, Is your machine really a Magnifax 3? Is it white or anthracite? The side drawer, which should now only be closed with a black metal plate with a handle, is for the additional condenser for KB. But actually, that was only introduced with the Series 4. Functioning colour heads are also only available for the Series 4. I therefore suspect you have a Magnifax 4 with Color 3. Settings: These apply if the colour head is anthracite. Not necessarily for white. Please check again and perhaps compare with the images on the FOTOIMPEX website. We also have a scanned manual for the 4 somewhere. I haven’t been able to find it on the website myself, though, and I’m not sure where it might be at the moment.... Regards, Mirko

It’s a Magnifax 3a, white with a colour head (halogen lamp inside); the colour head has knobs to turn rather than sliders like on the Color 3. For 35mm film, I have an extra lens (is that the condenser?) which can be swapped for the medium-format one above the book-style viewing stage. The top right drawer is empty. Can I email you a photo? Marion, In this case, you’ve actually acquired one of the oldest, still-functional Czech colour heads. Of course, it’s ‘relatively’ useless these days, as, in my opinion, dielectric vapour deposition wasn’t yet being used in the early 80s, meaning the filter values can vary greatly (depending on use) – they’ve simply faded. I would therefore not rely on any table but test it out. Without a filter = 2; more magenta makes it harder, and adding a touch of yellow makes it (even) softer. It depends on the subject anyway which gradient you want to use. You don’t know in advance whether it will be a 3 or a 4, so it’s not that important which filter setting produces exactly that value. You don’t need the extra drawer. The bit about the condensers is correct (which is why I was wondering why you have a KB condenser insert on the side). At the front is the filter drawer (which is now also superfluous because of the colour head). By the way, you can simply upload images to this post. Regards Mirko
