Hello fellow lab enthusiasts,
I’m on the lookout for a GOOD baryta washer, having had a rather poor experience over the last six months or so with this Paterson ‘shaking basket’ washing tub, which simply isn’t reliable. After washing fewer than 100 prints, the basket is already crumbling, not to mention that the rocking mechanism only started working at all after I fiddled with it for a while (reducing the size of the lower inlet), without flooding the whole place because the drain is too small for the amount of water required! But the physical principle behind the mechanism is also flawed: fresh water only flows in at the top and drains out at the top, so there’s no convection in the container. What’s more, there’s a problem with the continuous oscillation – the thing keeps stopping and starting for no apparent reason. Just popped out for a quick coffee and the mill’s jammed again! :) That must be the infamous ‘British quality’ that’s let me down a few times before.
Apparently, FOTOIMPEX hasn’t received any complaints from other users yet, as I was told over the phone. Have I really managed to get my hands on the only ‘lemon’?
So, does anyone know of a multi-chamber washer that ACTUALLY works and doesn’t cost so much that I have to sell my firstborn? Realistically, I’m looking at around 500–600 euros, but I’m grateful for any tips.
Best regards from the far south-west
