Hello everyone,
Does anyone happen to know whether the Fomaspeed Variant can also be developed using colour lighting (i.e. amber-coloured and very dim)? I now know that orange definitely causes fogging, whereas red definitely works. I took over the school lab yesterday and, naturally, the lamps on the 4-metre-high ceiling have orange bulbs in them. However, there are Dukal lights installed above the tanks for colour development. Before I start testing, it might be worth asking if anyone can tell me, ‘Forget it, just use red’. Many thanks.
Regards, Sven.

Hi Sven,
We’ve actually got a fairly bright Ilford orange light in the darkroom too, and it works perfectly with Fomaspeed. Yellow doesn’t work.
So I wouldn’t say for certain that orange doesn’t work.
Best regards,
Mirko

Thanks, Mirko,
I’ll just give it another go then. At home, it only worked once I’d put a red filter on top of the orange one. But that might be because the thing’s a bit old. I wasn’t really surprised, though, as your catalogue specifically mentions red.
Regards, Sven.

Hi Sven,
We need to play it safe in the catalogue to avoid claims for damages.
Red is definitely the safe option. But if you’re willing to experiment, you can try using brighter light and, ultimately, you’ll have better ‘visibility’ in the lab.
You know how to do a veiling test, don’t you?
(Place a coin on the paper and leave it next to the developing tray for 5 minutes; then remove the coin and turn off the light – important –; develop the paper in the dark + fix + rinse briefly; if the coin is visible, the light was too bright).
Best regards,
Mirko
