Hi everyone, Does anyone know of a supplier of photographic raw chemicals such as metol, hydroquinone and all that other stuff? Brenner does offer some of these in very small quantities, but at exorbitant prices! Are there any alternative suppliers who sell chemicals in quantities of 1–2 kilograms to private individuals at reasonable prices? I’d be grateful for any tips. Best regards, Kessler

Hi Kessler, There’s already quite a lot here: www.genec.de (not a huge selection, but the basics are there, straightforward delivery) www.omikron-online.de (almost everything, delivery after registration, end-user declaration and proof of expertise may be required) www.wcp-laborhandel.de (well-stocked, shipping like Omikron, but I just drive down to Renningen) www.merck.de (you won’t get anything there if you’re not a qualified person) and many more (Chempur, Sigma-Aldrich, Riedel de Hain), where you probably won’t get anything without a certificate of competence either. Alternatively, you could go to a chemist’s. That might sound expensive at first, but it does have a few advantages: you get it weighed out precisely and only buy as much as you need. There’s no need to present proof of expertise (which, unlike me as a chemist, poses a bigger problem for you), nor is an end-use declaration required. The delivery issue—and the rumours spread by neighbours about your new home drug lab—are also avoided. Best regards, Franz

Steven Anchell, the author of *The Darkroom Cookbook* and co-author of *The Film-Developing Cookbook*, recommended Mirko to me as a supplier of raw chemicals at the start of the year. Is that right? Apart from that, I buy locally, directly from the shop (actually more of an office in front of the large warehouse 8-) of www.koehlerchemie.de in Koblenz. If something isn’t in the database (and that currently includes Metol, for example), an email enquiry helps. The stuff is actually always in stock; they’ve just rebuilt the database and probably still have a few things to improve. By the way, for weighing, I’d recommend sending an email to the chemistry student union or the dean’s office at a nearby university, or giving a school a ring – some teachers are helpful (my solution so far). In future, I can pop round to Building 38 at the University of Kaiserslautern; the lads from the student union are keen to help me get access. Nice people. :-) Hope this helps, Regards, Roman
