Hi... It’s the newbie again with a question.
The instructions for my Kaiser focuser say that the image is displayed on a ground glass screen.
But when I look through it, I see the image on a rather rough plate, similar to textured sheet metal.
Is that normal????? Regards, Stefan

... this device doesn't necessarily live up to what its name suggests... There are other devices that do a far better job of living up to the name 'focus adjuster'...

Thanks for your reply... But by 'matte screen', I mean something like frosted glass, not something textured, do you see? The image would then be really grainy...

Was it a new purchase or a second-hand one? Ever since IhhBähhh, people have often tried to make a lot of money out of junk. That’s why repairs are sometimes a bit slapdash.

Durst and even Linhof produced similar designs, albeit with metal frames. I have the Durst version. It works best on a section of the negative with clearly visible textures.
At least I’m best placed to judge that, and the sharpness is spot on. I couldn’t get to grips with a Peak grain focuser at all.
When I have difficult negatives, I use a focus test negative. You can make your own if you can’t get one. Mine are from Eb…
but they weren’t expensive. Take a black negative, use a very smooth ruler and scratch a pattern into the emulsion with a thin needle. That then acts as a focus test negative.

It's brand new...

Perhaps someone has a picture of what the focus ring looks like on another Kaiser model, so we can compare them...

Hello,
The focusing screen is deliberately coarse so that you can easily focus on it with your eyes in the dark. This focusing screen really comes into its own with high magnifications, when the enlarger head is positioned 1 metre above the board and you can only look into its lens from a distance.
As long as your nose still touches the base plate when focusing, a simple magnifying glass (4x to 8x) will suffice.
Do not compare it to the viewfinder of a 35mm SLR; there, the demands on the focusing screen are much higher simply because of the small image.

Thanks a lot – now I know that’s how it’s meant to be and that the device is working properly... Best regards, Stefan
