Since someone asked me in another thread, and I’m looking for this myself: Where can I get photographic chemicals in non-industrial quantities??? OK, red potash is available from Fotobrenner, but ammonium iron oxalate is a bit of a problem. But I need both if I don’t want to keep buying the Cyanosetizer from Fotospeed at Monochrome (the price is actually quite reasonable; for 25 euros, it’s enough for about 20–30 8x10 prints (inches, of course) and it keeps well). Next problem: gold chloride solution. I know Mirko says, “buy Tetenal Goldtoner for 40 quid a litre”, but that can’t be right. All the recipes are online, but where do I get the ingredients??? Almost all the chemists have turned me down too. It’s not available pre-packaged and sealed.... Can you really get hold of all that rubbish without any trouble if it says ‘Domestos’ on it, and nobody knows what’s in it, yet if it’s 30% hydrochloric acid and unadulterated, you’re immediately seen as a terrorist and a bomb-maker?

I buy my stuff locally, in Koblenz. The shop is called Lehrmittel Koehler or Koehler Chemie; it seems to be a wholesaler for chemistry supplies. I used to be able to buy my schoolbooks there. www.koehlerchemie.de is the URL; the price list is currently offline. But just give them a ring – they’re friendly and quick, and they have everything in stock, even in smaller quantities (metol, for example, 50g for €8). The prices are definitely better than at Brenner. I only had to show my ID once, when buying 100g of hydroquinone. I don’t know the delivery costs, but they should be affordable. Accessories such as measuring cylinders, thermometers and Petri dishes are also cheap there. Another source is http://www.omikron-online.de/cyberchem/ . I haven’t bought from them yet, but they’ve always been more expensive than Koehler. A few more were posted recently in the Phototec lab forum; just search for Omikron – one or two other suppliers were mentioned in the same thread. And as for most photographic chemicals, the rule is: take your ID with you and head to the shop. Not everything can be posted, and even for laboratory chemicals not classified as hazardous substances, proof of age is required. You need to be of legal age; otherwise, you’ll just have to look around the shop and go home empty-handed. On the subject of pharmacies: basically, you can find *everything* in a pharmacy. Including dichromates – pharmacies are allowed to sell these, whereas chemical suppliers can only sell them to research institutions and pharmacies. The problem for the pharmacist is this: firstly, they buy small quantities themselves from, say, Merck, at the correspondingly high list price. Then he also wants to make a 15% profit on top of that. This makes buying chemicals there expensive for you, and buying just 25g on a whim – when the chemist can only buy 100g – is impossible. The next problem the chemist faces is that of professional competence. These authorities know that they are allowed to operate outside the Chemicals Act and therefore pay considerably closer attention to compliance with it. If he doesn’t want to sell you anything, he won’t do it. After all, he isn’t in a position where he has to go to great lengths to make no profit. So here’s my advice: if you can’t get what you need from a chemical supplier (oxalates, for example, are problematic there without proof of expertise), then find a suitable pharmacy. If that doesn’t work, have a browse on Wolfgang Moersch’s website (www.moersch-photochemie.de) and click your way through it (allow three evenings – the toning instructions alone make for interesting reading) until you reach the chemicals list. There you’ll find the address of Suvatlar, who stocks every conceivable kind of sheep’s dung. But of course, make sure you comply with the legal regulations regarding the supply and marketing of these products. Koehlerchemie is now also ‘reluctant’ to ship to private customers without proof of expertise. Back to the subject of oxalates: almost all of them are classified as “T” or “T+”. This means they are not available via mail order. And they cannot be supplied without proof of expertise and a declaration of final use. Some suppliers are a bit more creative than others, which is why I won’t name them here. Nor will I do so via private message; after all, we don’t know each other. In the end-use declaration, you should describe your photographic process and, finally, under ‘Disposal’: ‘Fill with calcium chloride, filter off, send filtrate to hazardous waste collection point’.
