Mark, Gradients are all smoke and mirrors. The numbers look so scientific – but they aren’t. A gradient of 3 simply means ‘normal’ and nothing else (e.g. it isn’t twice as hard as 1.5 or anything like that). In that respect, all these tables are of limited practical use. A different value must always be set for each type of paper to achieve a normal (or other) gradient. This value is usually published by the paper manufacturer in a table. I’ve been using a colour head for years and have never looked at such a table. If I want more contrast, I turn up the magenta; if I want less, I turn it down. All other filters always remain at zero. Only if you want an extremely soft look and there’s no more magenta to turn down, then turn up the yellow until it’s soft enough (usually it doesn’t get any softer after 70 yellow and, conversely, often doesn’t get any harder after 200 magenta...). With around 90 magenta, you’ll be about right for a first attempt, depending on the device and paper. Good luck! Regards, Mirko

Hi Mark, You can read about them here: http://www.meopta.cz/products/; Enlargers, Opemus, Color 4ES. The filters are the same for the Color 3 and the 4ES. But be careful: the values given are only guidelines (a good starting point), which you’ll need to measure for your own process. Bye, Gerd
