Hello, dear Forte/Classic users,
Which of you has experience with the 400 (or even the 200)?
I’ve heard the film is quite grainy, and I want to make the most of that by bringing out the grain in the print.
I’m thinking of pushing the 400 to 1000 ISO and then developing it in R09.
That should really bring out the grain quite well, don’t you think?
Best regards,
Michael

Michael,
I pushed the Classicpan to 1600 for quite a while and performed processing in R09 at a ratio of 1:100.
The result: excellent grey tones in the mid-tones and highlights, and a very pleasing grain even in 24x30 prints.
However, the grain is clearly visible to the naked eye, so you should only use this technique if that’s the look you’re going for.
Otherwise, you’re better off experimenting with Fomapan 400 or other films with fine grain.
It isn’t quite as coarse-grained as the Neopan 1600 or TMZ 3200, though.
The images appear very sharp visually and are cleanly separated in the mid-tones.
Have fun trying it out!
