There’s no straightforward answer to that. Both developers have their pros and cons, although the Silvermax is the more modern of the two.
One could therefore say that, for 35mm film, the Silvermax offers more advantages overall. For larger formats, it would depend on personal preference.
In our shop, we’ve categorised the developers according to their processing characteristics. I believe the description for Rodinal says ‘produces a very sharp image’.
It is therefore a developer that particularly emphasises one criterion. The Silvermax belongs more to the group of developers that seek a balance between sharpness, granularity and sensitivity. This suits normal photographic practice with 35mm film better. ATOMAL would also fall into this category, although the Silvermax produces a more three-dimensional result.
