The formulas for Orwo/Agfa’s ready-made developers were generally not published. Occasionally, however, they became known through indirect channels. Thus, one might come across F43/Final or N113, or be able to deduce the developer substances, the developer alkali, bromide content, etc., based on the characteristics (image tone, processing time, etc.). I never managed to do this with E102. It was my preferred developer because it provided that little bit more blackness whilst otherwise offering good accentuation of the 3/4 tones. Even though N113 is a marvel of consistency, it doesn’t achieve the deep blacks with a neutral image tone, even on matte paper. Does anyone have any idea what the MH ratios and which alkali were used in the E102 developer? Soda or potash? The modern Adox MCC developer comes close, but presumably uses ascorbic acid and phenidone rather than hydroquinone and metol. A homemade vitamin C developer does work and is cheap with washing soda, but it simply doesn’t achieve those deep blacks. I’d be grateful for any tips.

The MCC developer places a strong emphasis on image quality and – unlike Neutol ECO – has not been optimised for maximum environmental compatibility. In our tests, it outperforms E-102 by a long way, particularly with DMax. Best regards, Mirko

:winking-face: MCC – I love the smell of fresh oranges. The developer is great, but so is the price. The E102 question was about making it yourself. MH, alkali, etc. Best regards, Thomas
