Hello,
How do you get a roll of Fomapan 35mm film into a Paterson spiral without it getting hopelessly jammed about 40cm from the end?
It took me five attempts both today and the day before yesterday, and in one instance it only worked by cutting the film five frames from the end.
?
I’ve never had this happen with either Ilford or Agfa film before.
Best regards,
Gregor

Hello
Please check the reel for any damage or faults
It happened to me with Jobo.
I also use the AP canisters – they’re quite similar.

Hi Gregor, some films have a strong twist around the winding spool, and they’ve often got stuck for me too. Ever since I’ve started bending the first few centimetres back firmly between my thumb and the other fingers – almost snapping them back in the case of particularly stiff films – they’ve been gliding through like a dream.

Maybe it’ll help you too.

Hi Gregor,
First off, the usual suspects: was the reel 100% dry? Were your hands dry too? Were you wearing gloves (cotton or disposable)?
Regardless of the film you’re using, it will ‘glide’ onto the plastic reel more easily if you very gently lubricate it with graphite every now and then. Take a well-sharpened pencil or a mechanical pencil and run it lightly along the spirals – don’t apply too much graphite, otherwise you’ll end up with the excess on the film ;) It works very well. Otherwise, of course, always make sure to remove any wetting agent residue from the spirals. Otherwise, the stuff builds up and can lead to other nasty surprises...
Perhaps you already know all this, as these weren’t your first films, but it just popped into my head.
Have you been able to rewind films from other manufacturers without any problems since the Foma films? It would be interesting to know whether the problem lies with the Foma film or if the cause lies elsewhere.
Best regards
Sandra

It usually works better if you cut the tab of the film straight across and then cut the two corners of the end of the film at an angle. If the film still gets stuck at the end, gently tap the left and right sides of the spiral with the flat of your hand until it comes loose.

Apparently, this seems to be a fairly common issue.
I’ll give all the tips a go, but I don’t have any film waiting for development at the moment.
Thanks a lot.
I’m really curious to see what happens when I load roll film into the reels for the first time; I’m getting a Zeiss Ikon Nettar tomorrow.

With roll film, you should trim the corners as well. It makes things easier. Obviously, you should do this in the dark.
