Hi there.
With 6x6 film, the photos are usually square.
The square format seems to be the most widely used at the moment.
What if Adox were to bring a square black-and-white photo paper onto the market?
For example, 20 x 20 or 18 x 18.
Surely that can’t be too difficult – can it?

Hello Matthias,
Well, it’s not the most commonly used format, but square paper is surprisingly rare.
Back when we were still able to produce photo paper, we actually had it in our range!
We can’t do it now, though, because we can’t produce photo paper at all (it’s not economically viable).
Technically, we’re capable of it, but our productivity in emulsion coating and casting is lower than that of our competitors – due to our small-scale equipment – and since the margins are already meagre and costs in Germany aren’t exactly getting any lower, we’ve packed it all away and are waiting for better times.
Every now and then we produce a few square metres so as not to lose the knack, but the production costs are roughly double the market price.
At current competitive prices, photographic paper (high turnover, minimal price) can only be produced in a very large factory.
Best regards,
Mirko

However, there is photographic paper available in various aspect ratios. For example, 20x25 or 24x30 are closer to a square and result in less waste than some other formats.
