HC-110 is once again available in its original version, just as it was manufactured by Tetenal for over 40 years.

-Version with virtually indefinite shelf life, just like the HC-110 original recipe-

Thick, honey-yellow – and practically indestructible: the ‘Original Syrup’ is returning to the market under the name ADOX HC-110 Professional, offering the quality of the German version of the legendary HC-110.

The production of the original HC-110 “syrup” is complicated due to its viscous consistency, as bottling and filtering take more time and require special pumps. Consequently, the ADOX product is more expensive than the alternatively available, thinner version – but more than makes up for this with a virtually unlimited shelf life.

The ADOX HC-110 Professional combines all the characteristics of the original Kodak formula, including the ability to optimise contrast through various dilutions, as described, for example, in Bruce Barnbaum’s book “The Art of Photography”, in Chapter 9, pages 166–170.

Great, that’s what lots of users have been asking for. I’ll order it when my old bottle’s empty. :) Is this the original Tetenal formula, or has it been determined through analysis and reverse engineering? Has Bruce Barnbaum already tested/confirmed the full usability of the new production ‘outside the specifications’ (high dilutability, etc.)? Best regards from Jena, Sebastian

Hello @Mirko Bödecker, Your announcement of the Ados HC-110 Pro syrup brought to mind a long-forgotten experience. It must have been back in the early 80s when, as a young laboratory assistant, I overheard a technical discussion between a sales assistant and a customer. The sales assistant demonstrated the viscosity of the HC110 by pouring a little of it onto the saucer of his coffee. Now, I think – though perhaps my memory is distorted by all the decades that have passed since then – that the HC110 was thicker back then than your new version. So I have two questions: Is your HC-110 Pro also anhydrous again? And does it contain the ‘hallmark’ DEA-sulphur addition complex again, as Troop and Anchell describe on page 76, third paragraph, of their *The Film Developing Cookbook* (2nd edition, 2019)? The DEA-sulphur addition complex is roughly described as a diethanolamine sulphur dioxide complex on page 75, paragraph 4. And if I’ve understood correctly, the production of this complex is apparently also the key to Adox syrup. Best regards from the south, which has been cold for months now Andreas

I’ve tested HC-110 Pro with HP5 Fomapan 200 Fomapan 400 at dilutions of 1:63 and 1:126 The Foma films don’t develop well with HC-110; it didn’t work out. The HP5 develops superbly with HC-110. Both at 1:63 and 1:126. I’ll probably stick with 1:63 so I can develop as many flat films as will fit into the tank at once.

What do you mean, 'it didn't work out'? Were the negatives too thin? Or what exactly went wrong?

The Foma 400 films were developed far too thinly and hazily, even though I exposed the Foma 400 at 200 ISO. Foma 400 at 200 ISO in Rodinal 1+100 turns out very well, as does ID-11 / D76 1:1. HP5 also develops very well in D76 1:1 I don’t understand why Foma 400 turns out like that. But it doesn’t really matter. I prefer to use HP5 Foma 200 was developed far too harshly in HC-110; you can’t tame that in the positive. HP5 works very well –

Are you sure you compared the ADOX HC-110 PRO 'original syrup' and not the FOTOIMPEX version? If so, there shouldn’t actually be any differences.

The two versions work in exactly the same way. We had to invest quite a bit of R&D to be able to synthesise the “water substitute” ourselves.
