Hi everyone,
I just wanted to quickly post this. I found these trays whilst on holiday; they’re actually meant for cleaning barbecues, but they should work for darkroom work too. They aren’t as deep as proper trays, and they’re square. The internal measurement at the narrowest point at the very bottom is just 60 cm, so 50x60 will be a tight fit, but 40x50 should definitely work. And: they only cost about 10 euros each.
Of course, they aren’t as refined as the proper ones, and they had a few casting defects, but I was able to sand those away quite easily.
What do you think?
Regards

... well, the saving isn't actually that great – you can get a 30x40 tray here in the shop for €8.93 – and it's also questionable how easily you can get the chemicals back into the bottle or canister without spilling a drop when using this thing without a spout... I reckon that’s a bit of a misplaced saving...

They’re certainly more stylish than cat litter trays! A 50x50 size would work well too… bowls of that size are quite expensive, especially as you’d need more than just one. It even looks like there’s a spout (at least sort of). They could also work well as watering trays; seedlings up to 24x30 could probably still ‘float’ nicely in them, turn round and so on. I’d probably have taken them if I’d come across them, and if I were (at least vaguely) on the lookout for larger bowls.

I’d actually been thinking more along the lines of the price of 50x60 trays.

And apart from that: that’s exactly how I’d imagined it :)

Trays for 40x50 are quite pricey (especially given the quantity you need, as I mentioned). I’m still looking for some. These barbecue trays would probably be just the thing for me. Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to be possible to buy them online in Germany.

BBQ seems to be a Dutch distributor, and the shop where I bought it is one of those bric-a-brac shops that sell everything: from bars of chocolate to picture frames and cleaning products, right through to tools and tinned food. Similar to ‘Jawoll’ or ‘Action’. More like ‘Jawoll’. But Action might be an option – I think they’re from Holland too. Although they don’t stock any barbecue bits and bobs here.

...well, my really large bowls are now over thirty years old – so that puts the price into perspective...

I generally develop large prints (50x60) or 30x40 in the Jobotrommel. Three of these ‘bathtubs’ side by side
wouldn’t be possible in my small basement. But one for the final rinse would be good. For that purpose, however, I have a rubber oil collection tray measuring approx. 60x70. I place that in the laundry room next door, where there is a water connection with a floor drain.
