Hello everyone, I’ve bought a few 120 FOMAPAN 400 Action black-and-white films from our local shop, amongst other things. 1) How do I develop these using ILFORD Perceptol developer at a dilution of 1:1? 2) Development time? 3) Agitation frequency? I can’t find any information on this. Perhaps someone could help me out. Thanks

I haven’t really had any development time just yet. ? In any case, how you expose the film is also important. They say that Fomapan 400 only has a true ISO of around 200–250. With Perceptol, this speed would be reduced even further. You might then be left with only 100–150. In my opinion, you should definitely expose at ISO 100 – 200 at most – to ensure there’s still enough detail in the shadows.

Actually, I’m only familiar with the film as Fomapan 400 without the ‘Action’ suffix. I’ve only found the standard description on the manufacturer’s website as well. Oh, I’ve just noticed that too. Forget my post, as it doesn’t really help the OP. And there are no times for the 400 in the second link. I suppose I didn’t look closely enough :unsure: :unsure:

Hi Joachim, here’s my tip for your next purchase: just order a roll of 35mm film as well, then you can work your way towards the result you want by taking short bursts of 3 or 4 shots, without wasting too much film unnecessarily. Unfortunately, I can’t help you with your current problem either.

Hello everyone, I develop FOMAPAN 100 at a developer temperature of 20 degrees for 11 minutes (Perceptol 1+1) with perfect results! FOMAPAN 200 takes 7.5 minutes. That said, I can’t assume that the more sensitive the film, the shorter the development time. Often, it’s exactly the opposite. It’s only with the FOMAPAN 400 Action that I can’t find any information anywhere on how to develop it in the ILFORD Perceptol fine-grain developer! I wasn’t paying attention and assumed that such a run-of-the-mill film could be developed without any problems. I’m very happy with FOMAPAN.

Hi Joachim, In my opinion, the reason there are no instructions is that this combination doesn’t make sense. Perceptol for high-speed film really does ruin the speed :-) My tip: use A49, which gives about ISO 250. 1+2 for 15 mins for about N-1. I reckon with 1+1 and about 15 mins (maybe less) you’ll get normal contrast. Frankgröße

Perceptol reduces the speed of any film (not just high-speed films or Foma) by about one stop. So instead of ISO 400, you would need to perform exposure at ISO 200. Instead of ISO 100, you would need to set the camera to ISO 50, and so on. Almost every genuine fine-grain developer, such as Perceptol, has this effect. € As I mentioned earlier, you would probably need to increase the exposure for Fomapan 400 a little. This film does not actually have a true ISO 400 ‘by nature’. Rumour has it that it actually has a true ISO of 250. Although you can certainly expose it at ISO 400 without much concern due to the wide exposure latitude of black-and-white films, using Perceptol would certainly make things a bit tricky. To achieve good shadow detail, you would probably need to expose the Fomapan 400 at somewhere between 100 and 200. € € I can also recommend the Kodak XTOL developer, which I myself really enjoy using. € Advantages: ? .) It’s very cheap! At our local shop, a 5-litre batch costs only about €8. You can use it undiluted or through dilution. .) Very fine grain. Probably almost as fine as Perceptol. .) Full utilisation of the ISO sensitivity. So you can perform normal exposure. .) Very environmentally friendly and much less harmful to health than Perceptol.

You can find plenty of development times online. Even for Foma films. Xtol was introduced in the 1990s as the successor to the well-known Kodak D76 (virtually identical to Ilford’s ID 11). I’d go so far as to say that Xtol is now one of the most widely used and popular developers, alongside Rodinal and D76/ID 11.

That’s right, there’s plenty of information on development times – just none for Fomapan 400 and ILFORD Perceptol at a 1+1 dilution. PS: I just performed an exposure on a roll of Fomapan 100 at 100 ISO over the weekend and developed it in Perceptol, and the negative came out perfectly detailed!

€ I’m happy to believe you, of course! Did you develop it in the stock solution or with a dilution? As far as I know (though others certainly know more about this than I do), the reduction in sensitivity is all the smaller the more you dilute Perceptol. However, the granularity also increases. € Furthermore, it naturally also depends on how you expose, how precise your camera’s shutter speeds are, and so on. Of course, the subject matter also plays a role. If, for example, the subjects were low-contrast, such as a landscape under overcast skies, the shadow detail will suffer less. €
