Hello, I usually use ADOX MCP 312 – Pearl (PE) variable gradient. I’d be interested to know how the quality compares to Ilford Multigrade IV 25M – Satin (PE) variable gradient. I know this isn’t an easy question to answer, as subjective impressions often play a decisive role. But perhaps there are a few opinions on this here. Many thanks in advance, Ralle

Subjective differences: Ilford offers three finishes, whilst ADOX offers ‘only’ two. Consequently, the 25M may be more matt than the 312, and the 44M more textured. The 312 lies somewhere in between. This means it still produces good blacks but does not yet exhibit any distinct texture on the surface. Due to their emulsions, MCP and MCC can be developed to produce both slightly warm and cool blacks. Ilford is always cool black (or, with the new papers, one or the other). € Objective differences: MCP and MCC are silver bromide-silver chloride mixed emulsions. Ilford uses pure silver bromide emulsions. The technologies used to produce the multigrade differ objectively, so there are differences in filter behaviour. MCP should produce slightly cleaner gradients, whereas Ilford achieves half a gradient more. € No difference: Base (identical) Darkroom haze resistance (red, orange, light yellow) € Best regards, € Mirko

Thanks for the quick reply. Which Ilford paper is similar to the 312? I’m referring to the smooth (fine...) surface of the... ADOX MCP 312 - Pearl (PE). I only recently started printing again. Hence my lack of knowledge ;-) € Regards, Ralle

Hi Mirko, ? I’m wondering whether to buy the MCP in a matt or glossy finish. Are there any sample packs available, perhaps in 13x18 cm, containing 5 sheets each (for a fee, of course)? Buying two packs of the paper just to test them is too expensive for me...

If you lived near Wuppertal, I could show you the difference using enlargements. I think the ADOX MCP 312 – Pearl (PE) is very good and excellent value.

By ‘texture’, do you mean the physical surface texture of the paper? I hope that’s not a silly question :-)

We have sample packs of 24x30/5 sheets. € ‘Textured’ means that you can see ‘something’ on the surface – a texture. With completely matt paper, you only see a matt surface; with glossy paper, you only see a mirror-like shine.
