Hello,
I have a Durst M805 SW and I’ve got a big problem! The spring on the column isn’t tensioned any more, so the head won’t stay in place! Does anyone here on the forum know how to tension this spring again? Or what it’s supposed to look like in general?
Or do I need to get a new column?
Thanks in advance
Birgit

Forget about setting it up yourself – it’s definitely life-threatening!
You could give Mr Mehlmann (a former DURST technician – just Google him) a call and ask him how they used to do it at DURST. It’s hair-raising. ;-)
You’d be better off finding a new stand.
Personally, though, I’d just buy a complete M805 Color straight away. It’s not much more expensive (prices are rock bottom anyway) and it gives you the option of enlarging with mixed light or directional light, depending on your needs and the subject.
The attachment is quick to swap. That’s what I do too.

Has it come loose or has it broken? Either way, ask Kienzle or a local mechanical engineer or someone similar if they’d be up to the job. Kienzle will certainly do it, but then again, he does fit them into his new enlargers. The Italians certainly didn’t always use the best springs (steel), and back then they didn’t have the options available today. Now there are special springs combined with special hardening processes and various finishing processes, and they can withstand several hundred thousand bending cycles – after all, rolling up is essentially a bending process. Better to get a new one from Kienzle; it’s better for your health and lasts and lasts and lasts.
I know about the steel because the shop where I work manufactures such materials.
Also, springs from Durst are probably no longer available as spare parts.
