Hello,
I’m having a problem with the development of black-and-white medium-format film.
Parts of the negative in the centre show something resembling overexposure or overdevelopment. It looks as though the developer has affected the negative to varying degrees. (But that can’t be the case if the problem only occurs in the centre, can it?)
Perhaps one of you is familiar with this problem or can tell me what I’m doing wrong. What puzzles me is that it never actually affects the entire film, but only certain sections. (You can see this in the sample photos)
(I’ve never had problems of this sort with 35mm film. / -> I still need to get to grips with the limescale stains on 120 film as well)
I’ve attached a few sample photos.
A quick note on my development process:
Chemicals: Rodinal – Adofix – Adoflo
(I hadn’t pre-washed 120 film before. I’ve now tried it (because I’ve heard that it’s necessary(?)) -> but it didn’t make any difference)
For development times, I usually follow the Massive Dev Chart. I fix for about 4 minutes.
Many thanks for your help
Moritz

Off the top of my head, I’d say take one of the negative strips and soak it in fresh fixer for a few minutes. You can do this in daylight and see if the fog clears up. If it does, it was under-fixed.

To me, it looks like light coming in...

Hi Sven,
Thanks for your message.
I’ve just given it a go straight away and re-fixed a few strips.
Here’s the result:

After re-fixing:

That seems to have been the problem.
Many thanks for your help!

Hi Moritz,
After about four weeks, pour the fixer into the tank and develop with Adofix for six minutes.
Alternatively, you can place a piece of film exposed to exposure in some fixer. Wait until the film is clear, then double the developing time.
Best regards, Sven
