Hello,
It’s me again with my amateur questions. This time it’s a very quick one: last autumn I printed a photo on baryta paper. One print has been in a box ever since, the other was framed and stood in a corner of the room. The framed one has already faded a bit; the black is taking on a light brown hue. The white of the paper is unchanged. Did I wash it too little or fix it for too short a time?
Thanks for your help, Klaus

Hello Klaus,
A brown discolouration always indicates the presence of sulphur. This means that the paper was probably not rinsed thoroughly enough, as the fixer contains sulphur. With baryta paper, you should use Wash Aid, rinse for 45 to 60 minutes, and change the water more frequently.

You should also fix the print for as SHORT a time as possible. The deeper the fixer penetrates the paper, the longer you’ll have to rinse it afterwards to get it out again.
- Use fresh, high-concentration quick fixer (e.g. 1+4) to keep the fixing time as short as possible
- Use a wash aid, as mentioned earlier?
