Hello, I’ve been taking analogue photos for a while now and have even developed a few rolls myself! I’m currently travelling in Colombia and, as I’ve been here for over seven months, I stocked up on plenty of film beforehand! I wanted to get some developed while I was here, but unfortunately it didn’t work out – all I got was a transparent streak. So here’s my question: was it down to me, or did the bloke have no idea what he was doing? I had an Agfa Retro 80s and a Superpan 200 developed! I exposed them with my Minolta x300s, set the correct ISO beforehand and did everything else as usual! What do you need to do or bear in mind with these films? > nothing but a transparent streak. ? Is the frame numbering visible? If so, then the film has been developed (at least reasonably) properly and the problem lies with the camera. If there is no frame numbering, then something was wrong with the chemicals or the process.

Perhaps the black-and-white films ended up being processed as colour films. In the Bleach bath, the silver image is removed without a colour image having had a chance to form first – due to the lack of a colour coupler in the emulsion. That would explain the bare film. € However, repurposed aerial films are problematic for development in external labs anyway. Lab technicians – particularly those outside Europe – are unlikely to know the correct processing times for these exotic films. Furthermore, the material tends to come out rather hard in many standard developers. Rollei S films are actually ideally suited for home processing in equalising developers. There are many positive reports regarding results with A49 in this context; personally, I have processed the Rollei/Aviphot films primarily in the two-stage Diafine developer and achieved results that could be enlarged without any problems. € Best regards € tepe

Is there anything else I need to bear in mind when taking photos? Best wishes, moe SP 200 has a true ISO 100; I would use an exposure of around ISO 40 for RR80s.

... I’ve had my own experiences with Rollei Superpan 200 – it worked in some developers, whilst in others I was lucky to make out the faintest hint of an image... In particular, I couldn’t get a single roll of film to develop properly using the Rollei RHS developer – despite getting in touch with MACO. It was particularly important to me that the film came close to its 200 ISO – otherwise I might as well have used an APX or similar. In the end, development worked out with the following developers: D-76, A49 and Tanol Speed. I did get some nice results with Spur HRX – but not at 200 ISO.

We’ve heard from several users who ended up with blank films when using Superpan, even though they stuck to the development times specified by the supplier; it seems the times given were simply incorrect for some developers. I’d assume that in current data sheets, the times for which the problem was known (I think it was Xtol) have been adjusted… but you never really know. The film seems to be a bit of a special case here; with other films, a development time that is a few minutes too short results in thin negatives, whereas with Superpan this can apparently lead to a completely blank film. So it’s quite possible that ‘the bloke’ simply had an old data sheet, or, perhaps because he didn’t have a data sheet, he just went by feel and chose a time that would have produced a somewhat usable or at least visible result with most other films.

... that was exactly why I’d initially developed the Rollei Superpan in Rollei RHS back then – I was under the mistaken impression that nothing could really go wrong with Rollei film in a Rollei developer... Neither Mr Junghans nor Mr Schröder himself could explain the phenomenon... Well, never mind – they kindly replaced my films and the developer, and I’ve since found out which developers make the film do what it’s supposed to...

I use SP200 and RHS-DC: 1+50, 6 minutes at 20°C. The results are flawless.
