Hello,
I had a bit of a mishap today. After successfully completing the E6 development, I accidentally poured about 200 ml of stabilising bath into the primary developer. I reckon it’s ruined. But I’ve only developed three films so far and I’d rather not throw it away. Is there perhaps anything that can be salvaged?
Kind regards
Wolfgg
Hello,
That’s a tricky question. Unknown chemical reactions and dilution. If it was 1 litre of primary developer to which 200 ml of stabilizer was added, then it’s still worth a try, but only if the stabilizer didn’t contain formalin (which you can tell by the pungent smell). In that case, develop a small, correctly exposed piece of film as a test and extend the primary development time by 25%.
If it was 0.5 litres of primary developer, then there’s no point anymore.
In a case like this, the lab technician would simply quickly prepare a fresh batch of primary developer and that’s that.

I don’t think it’s formalin. It’s the Tetenal kit. And yes, the 200 ml of stabiliser was added to a litre of developer. I just read somewhere that the initial developer is very susceptible to contaminants.

The primary developer is actually just a modified black-and-white developer. Contaminants it cannot tolerate at all include colour developing agents, bleach-fix and, of course, any acidic solutions such as stop bath.
