Hello everyone,
Can anyone tell me whether I should fit a 250W bulb in my Varioscope 60? I’ve got some in stock. I picked them up at half price during a shop clearance. At the moment, I’ve got a 150W bulb in there. Does it make sense to use a stronger but shorter-lasting light?

... no, you should avoid exposure times of less than five seconds. What’s more, longer exposure times offer advantages if you ever need to use a dodger. When the Varioskop first came onto the market, photographic paper was nowhere near as sensitive as today’s papers – so with enlargers from that era, you can easily opt for a bulb one size smaller. The insert filters will also thank you for it, thanks to the lower heat output...

But that also depends on the size of the print and whether you stop down the lens. I’ve always powered my Leitz Focomat with 250 W
watts. First, though, you should check the maximum wattage you’re allowed to use. I’ve drastically exceeded that limit with the Fotomat before. The main issue with heat build-up isn’t the filters but the lifespan of your lamps. If it gets too hot, it’ll pop.
