The fineartforum for analogue black-and-white photography is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year. Highlights include numerous workshops, talks and an exhibition by ‘Ansilba’, a collective of black-and-white photographers who, in their artistic work, bring out the qualitative characteristics of analogue material, such as the rendering of the finest shades of light and the tactile effect of large-format photography. The works of Werner Kumpf, the group’s founder, Dr Otto Beyer, Klaus Nessel, Andreas Perlick, Christoph Schwarz and Andreas Wellmann tie in with the forum’s lectures, which traditionally also revolve around the philosophical aspects of analogue photography. Current issues in analogue photography are discussed and knowledge shared in panel discussions and artist talks. …

This year, the Forum once again offers beginners the opportunity to familiarise themselves with analogue techniques through workshops on film development and enlargement, whilst advanced participants can gain a deeper understanding of lighting and working with models in the portrait workshop.

Organiser Klaus Wehner and his dedicated team run the festival on a voluntary basis. Furthermore, visiting the Forum and taking part in the workshops has always been free of charge. The Forum aims to keep the importance of analogue techniques alive for our cultural memory. Digital images reflect a general acceleration in the reception and production of images; the black-and-white works on display at the Forum, however, speak more to the craftsmanship and artistic endeavour involved. This can also be very inspiring for those returning to the craft or trying it for the first time. According to Klaus Wehner, the festival aims to encourage people to engage with and explore this technique.
