Does anyone know of a supplier or wholesaler of photographic-grade silver nitrate for commercial purchase? I have two suppliers in the UK, but they only deliver domestically. What’s the situation here in Germany? I’ve had more than enough of the local search engines and ‘who-has-what’ websites. The price in the UK is around €500 per kg for purchases of 1–2 kg. Hello Michael, If you are a commercial user and can provide proof of this (VAT registration number) or, if necessary, provide a credible explanation of why you need the silver nitrate, then you can certainly order it from the usual laboratory chemical suppliers, such as VWR, Roth, Sigma-Aldrich, Riedel de Haen and Fluka (Note: be aware of the minimum order value, otherwise a surcharge will apply). They do not supply to private customers. As the price of silver is subject to fluctuations (some of which are speculative), you may need to enquire about the current daily price. The grades ‘ultra-pure’, ‘Ph.Eur.’, ‘pro analysi’ or ‘for analysis’ should be sufficient. Ask for a current safety data sheet to be sent with your order, but don’t let that spoil your enjoyment of the work entirely. Have fun.

Umes: If you go via Wolfgang Moersch’s website, you’re ultimately just redirected to Suvelar Chemie, where silver nitrate is offered at a record price of €4.50 per gram. ? Jochen53: I use at least 500g of silver nitrate a year, and among suppliers of laboratory chemicals, Roth is by far the cheapest for silver nitrate, though still 100% more expensive than my UK supplier. ? Hello Michael, One of the world’s largest manufacturers of silver nitrate is Ames Goldsmith Corp. in the USA. In Germany, there is, amongst others, a supplier in Essen called Cofermin (www.cofermin.de; Tel. 0201/7998720). Almost every chemical wholesaler stocks silver nitrate; Roth, VWR and others mainly deal in small quantities and are known for their consequently very high prices, with 500 g still falling under the ‘small quantity’ category. Larger quantities are used, for example, by a mirror manufacturer or an electroplating company; perhaps you could tag along on an order with them. I rang Cofermin today; today’s price delivered free would be €475/kg for a purchase of 1 kg.

Hi Jochen53; ? Great! Ames Godlsmith is my supplier in the UK. I haven’t thought about setting up a representative in Germany yet. A thousand thanks! I don’t know which part of Germany you’re from, but I’ll be at the Camera Obscura in Mülheim with my mobile collodion photo studio from 18–28 September. Do pop round if you’re in the area. Hello Michael, I’m glad I was able to help you. As a chemist, I often have to search for suppliers (it’s always better to look for manufacturers) of various chemical products as part of my job. I’m based near Munich, but I was born in Mülheim-Ruhr in 1953, which is right next to Essen, where Cofermin is based. Incidentally, the lady told me that they distribute a product from a manufacturer in the EU (I believe the UK is still a member). All the best. By the way, the black silver stains on your fingers are best removed with cyanide (though you don’t necessarily have to do that).
