Hi there,
I’ve just been struck by what seems to be a problem. The dilution for the Adotech II is specified for medium format as 500ml with 16.5ml of developer for films 1 and 2, i.e. 1:29. So far, so good. But now my small tanks require a volume of 590ml. I can still manage the mental gymnastics for films 1 and 2, but what’s the approach for films 3+4 and 5+6?
Thanks for helping me figure this out; I’ll start reeling the film in.
Andreas
Edith says: The starting point is 50ml of developer (Adotech 2). That’s the only way it makes sense.

This business of ‘topping the bottle up with water to 100ml’ won’t work as it stands; there wouldn’t be enough developer for films 5 and 6 (at least, that seems logical to me). I’m just going to assume that this procedure is primarily intended to protect against oxidation, so that a protective spray like Protectan could also be used as an alternative. It’s a handy product anyway; it easily makes my D-76 batch last twice as long as Kodak specifies (not recommended for others to try). Then, for films 3–5, it would remain at 1+29, i.e. 20ml concentrate + 580ml water.

1.: .... and film 6?

2.: and even that doesn’t work anymore, because Film 1+2 = 20ml, Film 2+3 = 20ml, leaving 10ml – that’s not enough for a film, as it’s only half-submerged in the solution. Oh, I couldn’t even manage playing with moulds back in nursery – HELP!
3.: Why isn’t the developer simply sold in 60ml bottles? Who actually has Jobo tins :(

I could only find 100ml bottles in the shop; only the ADOX website mentions the 50ml ones in a PDF. I’d assumed you already had the 100ml version.

If you’re keen to experiment, you could also increase the dilution a bit and extend the development time to get your 590ml. With a ‘conventional’ developer, I wouldn’t worry too much about that, but unfortunately I have no experience with the Adotech+CMS system.

Oh, I didn’t know that. But I actually have the 50ml bottle. The value pack with 6 films and developer :)
Hmm, I’d rather not experiment with the films. The photos are important to me – they’re irreplaceable – and I haven’t had any experience with that developer before. I suppose I’d better reorder some.
I’ve got plenty of the ‘conventional’ developers, but here – as I said – I’ve measured it out precisely.
But thank you very much for your help.

And with the specification "50ml Adotech 2", my first post finally makes sense. I’d completely forgotten to mention that.

Without having tried it myself, my calculations give the following figures:
1st run (films 1 and 2): approx. 16.5 ml of concentrate
2nd run (films 2 and 4): approx. 24.5 ml (of the concentrate, which has been diluted back to 50 mm)
3rd run (films 5 and 6): approx. 48.5 ml (of the concentrate, now diluted twice), i.e. practically the remaining contents
These figures are based on an initial value of 16.5 ml in the first run
In the second round, the dilution factor for the remaining volume of 33.5 ml is 50 ml / 33.4 ml = 1.49. 16.5 ml x 1.49 equals 24.59 ml.
In the third round, the dilution factor for the remaining volume of 25.41 ml is now 50 ml / 25.41 ml = 1.97. As this involves the dilution of the dilution, in order to obtain the same amount of active ingredient as in the first round, I must multiply by both dilution factors, i.e.: 16.5 ml x 1.49 x 1.97 = 48.43.

That’s absolutely right for 500ml. What about 590ml tanks? I’ll look into that using your method.
In the meantime, though, I’ve managed to find another Posso tank – a 500ml one. So all’s well that ends well.
Thanks for now,
Andreas
