This 5-day wet-plate collodion workshop is an intensive introduction to the wonderful world of ambrotype. You will learn how to create photographic images on glass, both positives (“ambrotypes”) and negatives for salted paper prints.

PhotoWerkBerlin offers this workshop in a garden at the Central Valley Project’s only daylight studio in Berlin Neukölln. Photographing wet plates in natural daylight not only produces a more pleasing image (as opposed to harsh artificial light), but also allows students to learn the challenges of exposure control under such lighting conditions. The workshop covers all stages of the positive (‘ambrotype’) process, from the chemistry involved and glass preparation to troubleshooting and creating your own unique images. Furthermore, it guides participants through all the advanced, more complex steps (as in the Advanced Wet-Plate Collodion Workshop) to produce negatives that are later printed on salted paper. All chemicals and materials are included in the course fee. Furthermore, equipment, including large-format (4x5, 5x7 and 8x10) cameras and antique brass lenses, is available.

No previous photographic experience is required. Limited to 4 participants.
